Google have announced that their new mobile friendly algorithm will be rolling out on April 21st. What this means for site owners is that sites that are optimised for mobile will be more likely to rank in search than those that are not.
With the latest reports showing that more than 80% of internet users own a smart phone and regularly use their devices to search for information on search engines, having a mobile optimised site is no longer a bonus, but a necessity to survive.
The new mobile-friendly algorithm is expected to have a much larger impact on search results than Google's previous Panda and Penguin algorithm updates. While the previous algorithm updates looked to assess sites based on their content and link profiles, the new mobile-friendly algorithm will class websites in a very black and white fashion. Your site is either mobile friendly or not.
Google have a host of tools available that provide some insight into how they expect websites to perform. You can test out how your website performs using Google's Mobile-Friendly Testing Tool. If your site is not mobile-friendly come April 21st, you will likely see a large drop in organic traffic.
